About the June 2019 4MA1 session

Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics 4MA1 (spec A) has two tiers: Foundation (Papers 1F + 2F, grades 5-1) and Higher (Papers 1H + 2H, grades 9-4). Each paper is 2 hours and 100 marks. Candidates sit two papers in their chosen tier — no mixing across tiers.

How to use these Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics past papers

Timed practice under exam conditions

Sit each paper for its full duration with no interruptions. Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics papers are 2 hours — long enough that pacing across the second hour is a real skill. Use a printed copy of the question paper for the most realistic practice.

Mark with the June 2019 MS

Edexcel mark schemes show the acceptable answer plus alternative wordings. Pay attention to the marking dots — they indicate the discrete points an examiner is looking for. Missing one usually costs one mark.

Read the examiner report (once released)

What's the difference between Edexcel IGCSE and Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics?
Edexcel IGCSE and Cambridge IGCSE are two parallel qualifications recognised globally. Edexcel 4MA1 has two tiers (Foundation 5-1, Higher 9-4) and is graded 9-1; Cambridge 0580 is single-tier with grades A*-G or 9-1 depending on session. The content overlaps significantly but the question style and emphasis differ — Edexcel tends to favour shorter structured questions; Cambridge often has longer multi-part questions. Universities and employers accept both equally.
How do I read Edexcel paper codes like 4MA1/1P or 4MA1/2H?
Edexcel paper codes follow the pattern SubjectCode/PaperNumberTier. For Math 4MA1, codes are 1F, 2F (Foundation tier) or 1H, 2H (Higher tier). Candidates sit two papers in the same tier — you cannot mix 1F with 2H.
When does Pearson release June 2019 Edexcel mark schemes and examiner reports?
Pearson publishes Edexcel IGCSE mark schemes on results day or shortly after — typically 8-10 weeks after the exam window closes. The examiner report follows roughly 2-3 months later, on Pearson's qualifications portal. The mark schemes for this session are available above. The examiner report has not been published yet.
Should I sit Foundation or Higher tier?
Foundation tier (Papers 1F + 2F) covers grades 5 down to 1 — a safer choice if you're aiming for a grade 4 or 5 with confidence and don't want to risk a U on Higher's hardest questions. Higher tier (Papers 1H + 2H) covers grades 9 down to 4 — required if you're aiming for grade 6 or higher. Discuss the choice with your maths teacher; centres usually entry students into the tier they expect them to perform best in.
