Frequently Asked Questions

What is Edexcel International GCSE (IGCSE)?
Edexcel International GCSE — officially the "Pearson Edexcel International GCSE" — is an international version of the UK GCSE qualification, designed for 14-16 year olds in schools outside England and Wales (and sometimes in independent UK schools too). Subject codes start with "4" (e.g. 4BI1, 4MA1). The qualification is recognised by UK and international universities on equal footing with the UK domestic GCSE. Most subjects are graded on the 9-1 scale; some legacy specifications still use A*-G.
Edexcel IGCSE vs Cambridge IGCSE — which should I sit?
Edexcel IGCSE (Pearson, codes starting with "4") and Cambridge IGCSE (Cambridge International, 4-digit codes like 0625) are the two main international GCSE qualifications. Both are accepted by UK universities and most international institutions. The choice is rarely yours individually — your school decides which board to enter you for, based on which specification the teachers are trained for and which fits the school's curriculum. The two boards differ in syllabus content, paper structure, mark-scheme style, exam dates and grade-boundary calibration, but neither is universally "harder".
Is Edexcel IGCSE the same as Edexcel GCSE?
No. Edexcel GCSE (codes starting with "1", e.g. 1BI0, 1MA1) is the UK domestic GCSE used by schools in England and Wales. Edexcel IGCSE (codes starting with "4") is the international version with a different specification and exam timetable. Both are Pearson qualifications, both are equivalent for university entry purposes, but the specifications and exam papers are different. Most UK state schools sit GCSE; many international schools and some UK private schools sit IGCSE.
When are Edexcel IGCSE exams and results released?
Edexcel IGCSE exams are mainly sat in May/June each year, with results released in late August — typically the third Thursday of August. A January session is also offered for some subjects, with results in early March. Question papers and mark schemes are published on the Pearson Edexcel website soon after each results day, and added to LumiExams shortly thereafter.
How should I use Edexcel IGCSE past papers for revision?
Work through one full paper under timed exam conditions, mark it against the official mark scheme, then read the examiner report for that session if Pearson has published one. The examiner report calls out exactly which questions students lost the most marks on and why — that's the highest-leverage revision target. Pair past-paper practice with topic-specific revision notes for any topic the examiner report flags as commonly misunderstood. Start one paper a fortnight two years before your real exam, and step up the frequency closer to the date.
