A-Level Mathematics Paper Routes

Cambridge A-Level Mathematics (9709) has 6 papers with multiple valid combinations for AS and A Level. This guide shows you exactly which papers to take and how they combine.

The 6 Papers

A-Level Mathematics consists of Pure Mathematics (core content) plus Applied Mathematics (Mechanics or Probability & Statistics).

Paper Name Duration Marks Level
1 Pure Mathematics 1 1h 50m 75 AS + A Level
2 Pure Mathematics 2 1h 15m 50 AS only
3 Pure Mathematics 3 1h 50m 75 A Level only
4 Mechanics 1h 15m 50 AS + A Level
5 Probability & Statistics 1 1h 15m 50 AS + A Level
6 Probability & Statistics 2 1h 15m 50 A Level only

AS Level Routes (2 Papers)

For AS Level, you take Paper 1 (Pure Mathematics 1) plus one other paper. There are 3 possible combinations:

1

Pure Only

Paper 1 + Paper 2

Pure Mathematics 1 + Pure Mathematics 2

Cannot progress to A Level

2

Pure + Mechanics

Paper 1 + Paper 4

Pure Mathematics 1 + Mechanics

Can progress to A Level

3

Pure + Statistics

Paper 1 + Paper 5

Pure Mathematics 1 + Probability & Statistics 1

Can progress to A Level

Important: If you take Papers 1+2 (Pure only), you receive an AS Level certificate but cannot continue to full A Level. Choose Papers 1+4 or 1+5 if you plan to complete A Level.

A Level Routes (4 Papers)

For full A Level, you take 4 papers. There are 2 valid combinations:

A

Pure + Mechanics + Statistics

Most common route

Paper 1 Paper 3 Paper 4 Paper 5

• Pure 1 + Pure 3 + Mechanics + Statistics 1

• Balanced coverage of all applied topics

• Best for Physics, Engineering

B

Pure + Double Statistics

Statistics focus

Paper 1 Paper 3 Paper 5 Paper 6

• Pure 1 + Pure 3 + Statistics 1 + Statistics 2

• Deep statistical knowledge

• Best for Economics, Psychology, Biology

Invalid combination: Papers 1, 3, 4, 6 cannot be taken together. Paper 6 (Statistics 2) requires Paper 5 (Statistics 1) knowledge. You cannot combine Mechanics (Paper 4) with Statistics 2 (Paper 6) without Statistics 1.

Assessment Routes: Staged vs Linear

You can take your A Level papers in two ways:

Staged Assessment

Take papers over 2 exam sessions (typically 2 years)

Year 1 (AS)

Papers 1 + 4 or Papers 1 + 5

Year 2 (A2)

Paper 3 + remaining applied paper

Advantage: Spreads workload, get AS grade midway

Linear Assessment

Take all 4 papers in the same exam session

Single Session

Papers 1, 3, 4, 5 all at once

or Papers 1, 3, 5, 6 all at once

Advantage: More time to prepare, all content fresh

Mechanics vs Statistics: How to Choose

⚙️

Choose Mechanics If

  • • Planning to study Physics or Engineering
  • • Enjoy forces, motion, and physical applications
  • • Taking A-Level Physics alongside Maths
  • • Good at visualizing physical problems
  • • Interested in aerospace, civil, or mechanical engineering

Topics covered:

Forces, equilibrium, kinematics, momentum, energy, Newton's laws

📊

Choose Statistics If

  • • Planning to study Economics, Medicine, or Psychology
  • • Interested in data analysis and probability
  • • Taking A-Level Biology or Economics
  • • Good at interpreting data and patterns
  • • Interested in finance, research, or data science

Topics covered:

Probability, distributions, hypothesis testing, correlation, regression

Note: Route A (Papers 1, 3, 4, 5) gives you both Mechanics AND Statistics at A Level. Only choose Route B (double Statistics) if you specifically want deeper statistical knowledge and don't need Mechanics.

Summary: Valid Paper Combinations

Qualification Papers Route Name Can Progress?
AS Level 1 + 2 Pure Only No
AS Level 1 + 4 Pure + Mechanics Yes
AS Level 1 + 5 Pure + Statistics Yes
A Level 1, 3, 4, 5 Pure + Mechanics + Statistics
A Level 1, 3, 5, 6 Pure + Double Statistics
