About the June 2024 1BI0 session

Edexcel GCSE Biology 1BI0 has two papers across two tiers. Paper 1 (1BI0/1F or 1BI0/1H) covers Topics 1-5: key biology concepts, cells, genetics, natural selection, and health. Paper 2 (1BI0/2F or 1BI0/2H) covers Topics 1 and 6-9: plants, animal coordination, exchange and transport, and ecosystems. Each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks.

How to use these Edexcel GCSE Biology past papers

Practise the right tier

Your centre will have entered you for a specific tier. Only practise that tier's papers — content is largely shared, but Higher questions are more demanding and the mark scheme expects more.

Time yourself properly

Each Edexcel GCSE Biology paper is 1 hour 45 minutes. The 6-mark "explain" questions usually need 8-10 minutes each — don't get bogged down on a single 6-marker if you're behind schedule.

Use the June 2024 mark scheme

Edexcel GCSE mark schemes show the acceptable wording plus alternative answers, often with marking dots indicating each discrete point. Mark strictly — if your wording isn't on the list, examiners won't usually credit it.

Read the examiner report (once released)

For this June 2024 sitting, the ER tells you exactly which questions the cohort struggled with and what examiners wanted instead. If you have one weekend to revise, the ER plus the question paper is usually the highest-leverage combination.

What's the difference between Foundation and Higher tier?
Edexcel GCSE Biology is tiered. Foundation tier papers (codes ending in F, e.g. 1BI0/1F) cover grades 5-1; the maximum achievable grade is 5. Higher tier papers (codes ending in H, e.g. 1BI0/1H) cover grades 9-4; the maximum is grade 9, but candidates who underperform on Higher can drop down to grade 3 (a "safety net" below the normal Higher floor of 4). Centres choose the tier based on expected performance — don't mix Foundation and Higher papers in practice.
How is Edexcel GCSE different from Edexcel IGCSE Biology?
Edexcel GCSE (1BI0) is the UK qualification used in English and Welsh state schools, regulated by Ofqual. Edexcel IGCSE (e.g. 4BI1) is the international version, taught in over 80 countries and not Ofqual-regulated. Both are graded 9-1 and accepted equivalently by UK universities, but the GCSE has tighter coursework rules and the IGCSE has slightly more challenging mathematics in the science papers.
When does Pearson release June 2024 Edexcel GCSE mark schemes and examiner reports?
Pearson publishes Edexcel GCSE mark schemes on results day (late August for June sittings, early January for November), with examiner reports following 2-3 months later. The mark schemes for this session are linked above. The examiner report has not been published yet.
